Depression Counseling & Therapy
Depression can affect every part of life, from your energy and focus to relationships and daily responsibilities. It may feel like sadness that doesn’t lift, a lack of motivation, or a heaviness you can’t shake.
Depression counseling offers a safe space to talk openly, explore what you’re experiencing, and learn practical tools for healing. I provide depression therapy in Denver and online across Colorado, helping you move toward relief and renewed hope.
Common Topics in Depression Counseling Include:
- Understanding depression: how it impacts mood, thoughts, and the body
- Daily struggles: fatigue, low motivation, appetite changes, sleep difficulties
- Forms of depression: major depression, persistent depression, postpartum depression, seasonal patterns
- Impact on relationships: isolation, communication struggles, loss of interest
- Therapy approaches: CBT, ACT, mindfulness, somatic awareness
- Coping strategies: grounding, self-care, daily structure, stress reduction
- When to seek help: recognizing when symptoms interfere with daily life
My goal in therapy is for you to see and feel growth through the process.
We have moments where you see how you respond and feel differently than before, and you continue to make choices that create a more meaningful life.
You will be able to look at every version of yourself, which I’ll explain in our first session what versions I mean. You will look in the mirror and like what you see.
Intentional Honesty: We live in a time where things are often filtered or watered down. We’re sometimes too ashamed to be honest and truthful. I take a lot of pride in gaining your respect and trust for our therapeutic relationship. And when the time comes, and it always does, I will be honest with you to help you experience breakthroughs and create the change you want in life.
I’ll be there with you… step by step.
It can be scary to admit you need help, but you can acknowledge that you want more and want to see how to get more. I can help you see that and do it in an honest, intentionally inspiring way.
Imagine waking up rested and optimistic about what the day has to offer!

Depression Counseling FAQs
What is Depression Counseling and How Does it Work?
Depression counseling provides a safe, supportive space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and life challenges. Together, we identify patterns contributing to depression and develop practical, evidence-based strategies to manage symptoms, improve mood, and support emotional recovery
What are the Symptoms of Depression?
Depression can affect your thoughts, emotions, and physical health in many ways. Common symptoms include:
- Persistent sadness or low mood
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
- Changes in sleep patterns (sleeping too much or too little)
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
- Irritability or restlessness
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Recognizing these symptoms is an important first step in seeking support. In counseling, we work together to understand your unique experience and develop strategies to improve mood, motivation, and overall well-being.
What Are the Different Forms of Depression?
Depression can present in several ways, and understanding the type you’re experiencing can help guide effective support. Common forms include:
- Major Depression: Intense symptoms of depression that interfere with daily functioning and overall well-being.
-
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia): Long-lasting, mild to moderate depression that persists over time.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Depression linked to seasonal changes, often occurring in fall or winter.
- Postpartum Depression: Emotional challenges following childbirth, affecting mood, energy, and bonding.
- Depression Related to Grief or Trauma: Emotional distress connected to significant loss, life transitions, or past traumatic experiences.
What Are the Treatments for Depression?
Depression counseling uses a variety of evidence-based approaches tailored to your unique needs. Common treatments include:
- Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies (CBT): Identifying and shifting unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to low mood.
- Mindfulness Practices: Building awareness and presence to reduce rumination and increase emotional regulation.
- Somatic Awareness: Techniques to connect with the body and release tension or stress held physically.
- Lifestyle Supports: Guidance on sleep, exercise, nutrition, and daily routines to support mental health.
- Medication: Some clients benefit from a combination of therapy and medication in collaboration with a prescriber.
The goal is not just symptom relief, but also building skills, resilience, and coping strategies that help you engage fully in life with renewed energy and hope.
When Should You Seek Therapy for Depression?
If feelings of sadness, fatigue, or loss of motivation are affecting your daily life, work, or relationships, it may be time to seek support. Counseling can be helpful at any stage of depression – whether symptoms are mild, moderate, or severe. Early support can provide coping strategies, improve emotional well-being, and prevent symptoms from worsening.
Do You Work With Children and Teens?
My practice focuses on adults, and I do not see clients who are 16 years old or younger. I do, however, occasionally include spouses or partners in therapy sessions on a case-by-case basis, but I do not provide couples therapy.
This allows me to provide focused, personalized support for each individual while maintaining a safe and effective therapeutic environment.
How Long Are Sessions?
Standard therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes. For clients who may benefit from a shorter or longer session, I also offer 30-minute sessions or extended sessions when appropriate. This flexibility allows us to tailor each appointment to your needs and schedule.
Do You Offer Telephone or Video Chat Sessions?
Yes! I offer teletherapy and video counseling sessions for all services provided by Penrose Counseling to residents of Colorado. Because I am licensed in Colorado, I can provide telehealth services to anyone within the state, but I am not currently licensed to offer therapy in other states..
